The solution to this Rental problem is to make it illegal to offer properties for rent that are mortgaged, and only accommodation wholly owned by the landlord can be rented or leased.
This has two effects
1. The landlord is forced to offer reasonable rents because around 90% of the figure will be total profit.
2. Fewer homes will be purchased because tenants will no longer pay the landlord's mortgage, thus increasing the stock of available houses for purchase. In the long term, this will bring house prices down as more choices will be available.

If this is true, it's the worst possible outcome for Labour. It will mean even less affordable accommodation if we accept that renting is cheaper than buying a house. These properties will be bought for home ownership, not for renting.

It still takes that option off the table. I did a very brief search earlier because another thought crossed my mind. Apparently, the least viable lease you can sell on a property is 40 years in terms of what banks will lend mortgages against. So, I wonder if any Landlords will consider selling leases as an immediate cash injection to use on other projects while (hopefully, if they survive) having a retirement asset to sell off once the lease reverts back to them.
I await the "Equity Release For Landlords" scheme. 🤣

I'm not sure it'll matter at this point. Both sides are starting to sound like they're the IRA and Sinn Fein gearing up for a long conflict akin to The Troubles. That would tear us apart in fairly short order if the Capitol Insurrection was any indication.
It is too early in the day to be so maudlin. I can't deny it is looking pretty bad. On the bright side there is still plenty of countryside for all to visit here in the Americas...

And so, as everyone knew, the Conservatives are barely represented in UK society today, having suffered the worst defeat in British political history. While there will be lots of jubilation for those who voted Labour, I can't help feeling that the biggest factor in their victory was that the Tories handed it to them on a plate, not only with their behaviour but also the arrogance of their belief in the former majority they held and that it wasn't won through any groundbreaking manifesto promises. In my opinion, a large proportion voted Labour to "Get the Tories out". To coin a phrase: "How the mighty have fallen." But as has been pointed out, that's democracy for you, and it proves that "Votes" do count.
Obviously, as a lifelong Tory voter myself, I'm not convinced that Labour is the answer or can address the problems facing us today, but they now have five years and an unbeatable majority to prove myself and my fellow Conservative voters wrong. From my point of view, all I can hope for now is for the Party to overhaul itself and look for By-Election opportunities to start clawing seats back.

I agree the Iraq war was a warcrime.
Regarding the tories:
We've also had Liz Truss losing 30bn quid in one week because she was criminally reckless and stupid, we had billions of public money stolen by the tories through the PPE and TrackandTrace scandals.
Brexit was driven by the tory right, and the the tory press lied on their behalf.
Thatcher privatised the water industry, which has led inevitably to our rivers and sea being full of shit.
I agree, Truss was not only a massive mistake but a huge disappointment given she was billed as the reincarnation of my hero Maggie.
With regard to PPE, Furlough, and, let's not forget, the Nightingale hospitals at £60M a pop, it depends on your perspective. While I was stunned at how the government literally handed over cash without any checks or balances, one could argue it was the right thing to do at the time, given everyone was shit scared of dying. Personally, I'd far rather they threw money away rather than clamp down on bureaucracy. What should have happened was for the Royal Commission to look into ALL payments made by the government at that time, with powers to recover funds where appropriate.
I agree with Margaret Thatcher. It is not the government's role to run businesses and provide employment. Where it all falls down is the likes of OFWAT, either not having enough power or not really doing their job properly and sanctioning the arse off, in this case, the water companies.

A guy has a 2011 PC running W7, but Office won't activate on it. He sends us a second PC he's found and asks us to transfer everything over. The only trouble is that it's that old story: "If it's slung up the back of a cupboard, there's a reason." It's a 2009 PC!
I offer him an i5, 32GB 256 M.2 plus M365; he tries to tell me they have a bunch of M365 licenses and "Can't we use one of those?" after telling him to basically fook off, he then says, "Well, you can have it here in a bit can't you?" I have to explain that; basically, he's wasted the morning, and now our guys are starting lunches, and if he's lucky, he'll have it this afternoon.
Why do people take three weeks to decide and then think they can have it within the hour?

if your preferred candidate doesn't win you get no representation of your views.
If there is someone with a realistic chance of winning who partially represents your views and you vote for them you may at least get some representation.
And of course if everybody does that the parties that are least worst get in.
Where it falls down even more is it the least worst option crosses some red lines. Then you either vote for something you don't agree with, vote for someone who you know won't get in or stay home.
I can't really blame people for staying home. If a party wants people to vote, then convince them. "Voter apathy" is really blaming the wrong people.
I don't believe in proportional representation; I think that only increases the chance of someone "Getting in" who one didn't vote for. I think it's a problem that's getting worse in everyday life, tbh. There is far too much choice. You should see my arguments around my local fish & chip shop.

Tories narrow gap to Labour in poll as Sunak says election result not ‘foregone conclusion’
Poll shows the Conservatives have closed their gap behind Labour to 15 points, the smallest lead for Sir Keir Starmer’s party for a monthMatt Watts (Evening Standard)
Before people start throwing their toys out of their pram, both the Tories and Labour have been guilty of racism! Labour still has a problem with antisemitism, and the Conservatives have had to deal with Islamaphobia.
If there is such a thing as "Tactical voting", that must mean your votes count!
Remember, you might be stuck with someone for five years, or less, and then you can vote in someone else once the dust has settled.

in reply to dick_turpin • •So a couple of people have said to me, "They've got plenty of money!" (i.e. pensioners) Even the wife said, "Have you seen all the pensioners in Marks & Spencer?"
My response is the same as Jeremy Clarkson's. "So, in other words, you work hard all your life and put some money aside so that your retirement, where you have no other income other than your pension, is slightly more comfortable and along comes a group of people who notice you have a couple of quid and take it off you to give to some workshy layabout. And they call that socialism."
I'm not angry because I already knew this was the kind of thing Labour does and will always do. The Labour Party may well change its outward appearance, but at its core, the only idea they have is to take from one to give to another. Labour's idea of 'growth' is to increase the size of public employees so that:
A. There are more union members.
B. Employment and wage increases are guaranteed.
