There are 650 Constituencies (Seats) in the UK. Your constituency can only send one MP to Parliament, so if your preferred candidate wins, they will take one seat in the house. If there is someone with a realistic chance of winning who partially represents your views and you vote for them you may at least get some representation.
And of course if everybody does that the parties that are least worst get in.
Where it falls down even more is it the least worst option crosses some red lines. Then you either vote for something you don't agree with, vote for someone who you know won't get in or stay home.
I can't really blame people for staying home. If a party wants people to vote, then convince them. "Voter apathy" is really blaming the wrong people.
I don't believe in proportional representation; I think that only increases the chance of someone "Getting in" who one didn't vote for. I think it's a problem that's getting worse in everyday life, tbh. There is far too much choice. You should see my arguments around my local fish & chip shop.
