Given the amount of children we have seen starved to death by their so-called parents I'm willing to pay for any child to get at least one meal a day out of my taxes regardless of how much their parents earn.

dick_turpin reshared this.

in reply to Neil Darlow :gotosocial: :silverblue: :xmpp:

Interestingly, I've been saying for years that schools should provide at least one hot meal a day for free for all pupils. I'm fairly confident those parents who can afford to contribute would even if it was to pay for another child's meal.

For me, it's not about providing a "Freebie" it's about ensuring there's not another bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birm…

in reply to dick_turpin

Many of those children were eligible for a free school lunch but otherwise would have gone without a breakfast. For many reasons but my wife believed that you can't learn on an empty stomach.
in reply to Neil Darlow :gotosocial: :silverblue: :xmpp:

@neil
We looked at this in a local primary school I was a governor of a few years ago. We tried to find funding for a lunch for all pupils. The evidence was that attainment and health was improved by doing this. However we could not get it done.

The issue was not around cost as it actually would not have been too costly. However we had issues finding a specific budget pot that could be used to fund it.

in reply to Kigelia

The sensible idea would be to have a "Meal Club" account. The only issue I see with that is if the account accrues too much money, some councillor or MP will try to get their grubby hands on it rather than letting the school fund a Christmas dinner or something extra.

The only other thought I had was there would be scum out there that would stop feeding their kids: "You had something at Breakfast Club, didn't you?"

You voted this lot in. All they know how to do is take from people with a little money. There are plenty of areas they could have raised the cash from, such as foreign aid, for example. This has nothing to do with the £22 billion black hole and everything to do with taking from citizens who have invested in their future. Anyone who voted for Labour should hang their heads in shame today.

bbc.co.uk/news/live/c62rygz20g…
in reply to Adam Dalliance

So, how long of a given sentence do you think someone should serve? A day? A week? A month? What is the point of giving someone twelve months custodial if they know there's a chance they could be released within two or three months? And given how tariffs work, they could be out within a month once "Time served on remand" has been taken into account.

I blame ALL governments for not investing in 'capacity' within the UK, including the NHS and education. The population has exploded since the '60s to 80 Million, and we're still stumbling along with a capacity of 53 Million; there are only so many eggs you can squeeze in a box before they start cracking.

in reply to dick_turpin

Length of sentence depends on circumstances of course, and then on behavior inside.

I get the impression that sentence-inflation is much of the cause of the overcrowding. Keep making sentences longer without building more capacity with no indication that doing so has any good effect on actual crime levels.

Not investing in the country and all the austerity since the banking crisis in 2008 does seem to have broken just about everything.

While I can fully understand the parents' pain and distress caused by questioning Lucy Letby's conviction, I would have hoped they would want the truth and not what appears to be, on the face of it, a very thin case. I'm unsure if an accusation of "Well, according to the rotas, you were always on duty when incidents happened!" is proof of guilt. Now, eminent professors are starting to question the medical evidence.

People say strange things about themselves in dark moments of personal crisis.

Here's a simple question: Have you ever rubber-necked a crash on the motorway? Have you ever been disappointed that the collision wasn't horrific and just looked like a bad shunt? Does that mean you are a killer? I would argue not. People do lots of things that that with hindsight may not be the best of ideas. Does looking at Best Gore (The site is gone now, thank The Pond Gods) make one a serial killer? The trouble is, the police and courts would say, "Ah! See what he was looking at? He must be guilty." the same can be said for her diary; it fits the narrative, but that doesn't mean it's proof.

I would argue we've seen an erosion of: "Beyond reasonable doubt." over the years in favour of the Vera syndrome: "Com on, you did it!" 🤷‍♂️

See, that is the greatest lie of the 21st century. While some of the initial countries, such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and possibly even Turkey, might be a bit dangerous for them, you can't possibly believe Hungary, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and France or Germany, Belgium, and France are not "Safe Countries" for a fleeing Afghan?

I watched a programme the other day documenting how numerous towns across Italy are welcoming migrants in the hope of reanimating dead towns and villages. Yet, thousands ignore that option and race for Calais.

While many migrants may have family in the UK, that doesn't mean they get an automatic right to come here. It is obvious why Britain is the destination of choice. I wonder what would happen if the welfare state was abolished?

in reply to dick_turpin

I didn't say anything about the safety of those countries.

Are you under the impression that there's some international rule saying people fleeing war have to stop at the first safe place they come to?

That rule doesn't exist, and it would be madness if it did, forcing the fleeing population to bunch up on the borders instead of spreading out around the world.

Scotland also wants immigrants, the UK is in dire need of immigrants because the population is old and retiring.

Most immigrants don't pick the UK, and those that do usually do so because of the language I suspect. That and Only Fools And Horses.

If they are under the impression we have a particularly generous welfare state they soon find they are mistaken.

I see a lot less now I'm off Twtr. Maybe I should stop following you here. It may be better for my mood.

in reply to Steve

I would have said it's a free country, but now that Starmer has told Mark Rowley to go after anyone, be they rioters or people posting on Facebook, it's not as free as it once was.

The laws have been in place since 2012, and while a few convictions have resulted from them over the years, they have not been enforced as severely as they are currently being implemented.

To be clear, every rioter deserves all they get, although I'm not sure a 12-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl deserve the full force of the law. Youthful exuberance springs to mind. What next? Shipment off to a re-education camp?

I'm not overly keen on a custodial sentence for something written on social media. I remember seeing the phrases Ubuntu and Rape being used in a post a few years back. Should the author get 18 Months for that? It seems to me sections of society want to pick and choose. There's a reason Lady Justice has a blindfold: the justice she dispenses is fair and equal to all.

in reply to Steve

Anyone who does not come via our Customs system is illegal, period. There is no argument or justification anyone can put to me to change my belief in that regard.

Nobody said you said anything? I was hoping you could explain the distinction to me.

I would argue that Starmer's current actions are borderline fascist. He's not ordered water cannons onto the streets. He's not offered some form of arbitration bringing 'community leaders' together; he just appears to have brought out the cosh. Which also seems to be weilded towards only one side of the argument.

in reply to dick_turpin

Why should I explain something I never proposed? The twitterati seem to spout random opinions.

What are the sides in this argument? People who are attacking the police, torching cars, trying to burn down hotels and other violent acts need to be stopped and deterred. They don't seem interested in arbitration when they turn up with beer and masks.

Do we have water cannons? Johnson bought some that were never used.

I fear someone will be killed. That would be tragic.

This is Labour's classic incompetence. They cancel things like the Bibby Stockholm barge and the Rwanda plan without offering the general public an alternative solution.

Now, there will be those who will say, "That's got nothing to do with it!" But it has everything to do with it. Southport was simply the lancing of the boil that has been building for a good few years now. I'm also uneasy about simply labelling this unrest as "far right." There's massive unhappiness on all sides. The government needs to look at treating the symptoms and not the easiest route of swiftly cutting an arm or leg off, hoping that stops the patient from complaining.

ft.com/content/a6f39365-8f2a-4…

in reply to dick_turpin

Ah come on, that's crap - I mean sure labour need to figure out a sane plan for that lot; but these riots are the combination of a) Taking advantage of a tragedy on purpose b) Drunks in hot weather c) and the strange coincidence of it being the same week the EDL leader left the country to avoid a court hearin.
in reply to penguin42

Most civil unrest is started by incidents that bear little relation to the main thrust. The problem these days is that one has to be very careful of what words are used, mainly because people's emotions are on a hair trigger.

I do not disagree with some of what you said; however, I do think a larger portion of the UK than folk are willing to admit are at the end of the road with illegals, and they are illegal if they don't come through customs. People feel marginalised and frankly shat on. I get it when young folk have no job or a chance of getting a council house, let alone a mortgage, and they see videos on 𝕏 of people in hotels getting three square meals and all the support they need.

I totally agree. This is mindless thuggery, and yes, there may well be elements of right-wing influence, but to believe that's all it is is naive or, at the very least, too simple an answer. I honestly believe the problems run deeper than just simple racism.

in reply to dick_turpin

I don't disagree with there are people feeling alienated - but purposely feeding on that with a nasty tragedy is terrible.
No one has a clue what to do with the illegal immigration though - and it's not just UK, most of the media don't point to the same conversations happening all around Europe.
in reply to penguin42

Mistakes have been made on illegal immigration. If you are seeking asylum you don't dump your ID in the channel and come into the UK undocumented.

And, as a new government, you don't just give an amnesty to 90,000 illegal migrants without checking it's safe to do so. I know there must be some hiding in the countryside who dodged Border Force and entered unchallenged.

There is so much going wrong in our country now. A neighbour witnessed Shoplifters from London arriving by train, at our station, emptying supermarket shelves unchallenged and hopping on a train back to London. When train station staff were informed of it they said "Yeah, they've got it down to a fine art" and the police are totally disinterested.

in reply to Neil Darlow :gotosocial: :silverblue: :xmpp:

@neil To be clear; I'm not saying everything is good - I agree there's a lot of stuff screwed up; just no point justifying these riots from that.
in reply to penguin42

The riots can't be justified. They're executed by organised actors I believe. There are grievances which have been exploited by the rioters I agree. But as Pete said, the underlying grievances need addressing and the government listening to the people would be a good start.
in reply to penguin42

💯
That's what I've been moaning about for months. Our news, especially the BBC, is so biased and geared to only allowing left-wing stories that the British public is unaware European countries have walls of barbed wire and are shipping their illegals to Morroco and Algeria. I suspect an illegal would rather be shipped to Rwanda than Algeria! And yet, the woke brigade managed to successfully sabotage the program through disinformation and shaming.
in reply to penguin42

Wrong on a few fronts there too:

The EDL hasn't been a thing in over 10 years and Tommy Robinson has nothing to do with whatever might be left of it.

The police detained him for the allowed 6 hours permitted by the anti-terror legislation they arrested him under. He was released without charge unconditionally and he went on holiday with his family as he had arranged prior. He didn't leave by secret means and flew out of the country like anyone else.

There is no arrest warrant awaiting him for not attending a fictitious court hearing. This is all a fabrication of the lefty media.

in reply to Neil Darlow :gotosocial: :silverblue: :xmpp:

@neil Hmm; so I don't know all of the details of that - but the BBC is listing a specific contempt of court case at the High Court last Monday that he was supposed to attend; bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cjerxd…
in reply to penguin42

Don't know about what the BBC are reporting, they're not a trustworthy news outlet. The description of that court case seems a bit flimsy "Repeating something he said about a Syrian which he'd been told not to"?
in reply to Neil Darlow :gotosocial: :silverblue: :xmpp:

I heard it was a video he was not allowed to show, which he duly showed yet again (I presume on 𝕏?) Of course, the key question should be, is this video (which I have not seen) fictitious, or is it that the video would stir up trouble? If it's the latter, I wonder if that's "suppression of freedom of speech"? 🤷‍♂️

I have no time for Tommy Robinson, but it's a stretch to say he's behind these riots, which I've seen promoted on 𝕏 throughout today.

in reply to Neil Darlow :gotosocial: :silverblue: :xmpp:

@neil While I don't trust the Beeb that much, I don't think they're just going to make up the court case - I'm not sure how big a deal the case is; but surely it fits with this stuff - lieing to stoke up trouble by claiming everything is due to illegal immigrants (of which some is, some isn't - but don't lie about it!)
in reply to penguin42

I think that's the key right there. There are mistakes on both sides, but the biggest mistake is not accepting that there are sides and differences. Where we go wrong is believing we are all homogenous, but we're not. We can all rub along nicely so long as there's an equilibrium. Sadly, at the moment, there's not, and that's why everyone is up in arms.
in reply to penguin42

My biggest concern about this "court case" is the warrant being issued but the judge saying not to act on it until October so that Robinson my choose to attend voluntarily. Something's off there.

I don't believe that Tommy Robinson is behind these riots. He's spent a lot of time recently reporting inequalities in the law and urging those attending his rallies to behave lawfully and respectfully. It's also worth noting that all demographics of society have been present at those rallies.

And so the "Nows our chance to get lots of money" begins.
