So #labour and Kier Starmer have succeeded in scaring UK ๐ users into silence with 118 prison sentences handed out some of which are related to people making posts on Social Media. In the good old days, you could talk bollocks in a pub nowadays, you'll get two years for making an inaccurate post. ๐ฎโโ๏ธ๐๐

Musk could be guilty of such crimes himself.

I've not heard of anyone being banged up for chatting down the pub.

Anyway, things seem to have quietened down a bit now thugs and keyboard warriors are getting banged up. Maybe it works.

I see a lot less now I'm off Twtr. Maybe I should stop following you here. It may be better for my mood.

in reply to Steve • •I would have said it's a free country, but now that Starmer has told Mark Rowley to go after anyone, be they rioters or people posting on Facebook, it's not as free as it once was.
The laws have been in place since 2012, and while a few convictions have resulted from them over the years, they have not been enforced as severely as they are currently being implemented.
To be clear, every rioter deserves all they get, although I'm not sure a 12-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl deserve the full force of the law. Youthful exuberance springs to mind. What next? Shipment off to a re-education camp?
I'm not overly keen on a custodial sentence for something written on social media. I remember seeing the phrases Ubuntu and Rape being used in a post a few years back. Should the author get 18 Months for that? It seems to me sections of society want to pick and choose. There's a reason Lady Justice has a blindfold: the justice she dispenses is fair and equal to all.

Funnily enough, the Tories handled the 2011 riots in exactly the same way (rapid prosecutions). A tactic that Kier Starmer has successfully re-used.

Rapid riot prosecutions more important than long sentences, says Keir Starmer

I think the pertinent point here is why can't they shift, recruit resources and cut the time for asylum claims to reduce the massive waiting list which, in turn, leads to the need to house people on a temporary basis until their claim is ruled on.

Sorry - by 'they' I lay the blame at the previous incumbents, not Labour necessarily.

The country marches towards authoritarianism whichever party is in power.
