So #labour and Kier Starmer have succeeded in scaring UK ๐• users into silence with 118 prison sentences handed out some of which are related to people making posts on Social Media. In the good old days, you could talk bollocks in a pub nowadays, you'll get two years for making an inaccurate post. ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐—•๐—•

Your post is inaccurate. There have been no new laws on this since the election. Online safety act is from last year. I wonder who came up with that.

Musk could be guilty of such crimes himself.

in reply to dick_turpin

Well the courts will act based on existing laws that were not added by this government. How do you think the previous lot would have handled this? Some of them have gone very quiet.

I've not heard of anyone being banged up for chatting down the pub.

in reply to dick_turpin

just wondering why you're blaming the current government. Were you concerned when peaceful protesters for dragged away by police in recent years? I get that you are looking for ways to bash them. Hey, that's your free speech that's legal.
in reply to Steve

For the third and final time, where does it say "New Law"?
in reply to dick_turpin

you're like a stuck record. It was implied in what you said. How else does a government control what the courts do? I'm waiting for Farage to get charged.

Anyway, things seem to have quietened down a bit now thugs and keyboard warriors are getting banged up. Maybe it works.

in reply to Steve

No, you are wrong, but refuse to admit it. And don't presume to tell people what they infer.
in reply to dick_turpin

We can disagree on who is wrong. We each have our axes to grind and have a global platform these days rather than just who's in the pub. If you put stuff out then expect to have it scrutinised and interpreted in various ways.

I see a lot less now I'm off Twtr. Maybe I should stop following you here. It may be better for my mood.

I would have said it's a free country, but now that Starmer has told Mark Rowley to go after anyone, be they rioters or people posting on Facebook, it's not as free as it once was.

The laws have been in place since 2012, and while a few convictions have resulted from them over the years, they have not been enforced as severely as they are currently being implemented.

To be clear, every rioter deserves all they get, although I'm not sure a 12-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl deserve the full force of the law. Youthful exuberance springs to mind. What next? Shipment off to a re-education camp?

I'm not overly keen on a custodial sentence for something written on social media. I remember seeing the phrases Ubuntu and Rape being used in a post a few years back. Should the author get 18 Months for that? It seems to me sections of society want to pick and choose. There's a reason Lady Justice has a blindfold: the justice she dispenses is fair and equal to all.

'How do you think the previous lot would have handled this ?'

Funnily enough, the Tories handled the 2011 riots in exactly the same way (rapid prosecutions). A tactic that Kier Starmer has successfully re-used.

@andyc Exactly and they enacted the online bill. If Starmer had done less he'd be called 'weak' by the right, so he can't win. Politics is not a zero sum game for us citizens. We all want a peaceful and just society.

@steevc @dick_turpin

I think the pertinent point here is why can't they shift, recruit resources and cut the time for asylum claims to reduce the massive waiting list which, in turn, leads to the need to house people on a temporary basis until their claim is ruled on.

@steevc @dick_turpin

Sorry - by 'they' I lay the blame at the previous incumbents, not Labour necessarily.

Mark Meechan was sent to jail for posting on social media in 2018. He make his girlfriends dog do hitler salutes and filmed it for instagram. So we don't really even need the tories most recent round of censorship laws to imprison folks for social media jokes.

The country marches towards authoritarianism whichever party is in power.
