I wonder what would happen if #birdsite was to link to #ActivityPub, making twitter.com one of the biggest instances connected to the #fediverse just like that.

if corporate social media wanted to wrestle back control, Embrace-Extend-Extinguish is absolutely how they would go about it.
It should be defended against with extreme predjudice, I can't imagine Gmail would've thrived if the SMTP network decided altogether to not route mail to it.
