The hypocrisy of the West
Everyone was up in arms about the Russians conscripting men to fight in Ukraine with soldiers grabbing people off the streets, but when Ukraine does it, that's OK. 🤔

In Spain some politicians are talking about getting back again the mandatory military service, but a selective one (that means only for the working class).

The Conservatives, here, announced the re-introduction of National Service as part of their [hopeful] vote winner which personally I'm in favour of if only to solve some problems such as unemployment and youth crime. Obviously, there is always a danger that conscripted soldiers may be used in conflict but then again, you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs. 🤷‍♂️

I don't know in England but here when We had one it was a mess, with people losing a year and learning nothing and having pretty clear idea of running away from conflict and from the military.

We had it from 1949 to 1960. (My father was in the Marines.) The service lasted 18 months. I'm sure there would be a lot of initial problems, such as desertion. TBH, while our forces are probably the best trained, I doubt we could fight (on our own) any major conflict. We certainly couldn't do another Falklands, for example.

I almost had to do it, it went from 18 months to 12 the latest years, I postponed all I could and when I had to go I had the option for a civil service instead, chose that one and "worked" for the Red Cross.
